If b-ball is life, Dan Porter wants you to live yours to the fullest. 

Porter, the original CEO of mobile gaming company OMGPOP and creator of Draw Something, is the man behind Overtime, an app that features highlights of amateur basketball action from all over the country — and lets users upload their own.

Launched in 2015, Overtime was the result of a missed shot, or more precisely, when Porter missed his son scoring a winning basket. 

Pulling up the app at the Mashable office immediately brought up highlights from The Cage, a well-known basketball court in downtown Manhattan. Highlights can be shared on the app and on social media and also be embedded in websites. Read more…

Libyan swimmer crowdfunds her way to the Summer Olympics in Rio


We’ve previously heard about individuals crowdfunding their way through school or other less noble initiatives, but it’s not often we come across world class athletes using such platforms to earn a chance to compete. 17-year-old Daniah Hagul from Libya has successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign that will see her attend the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio set to take place in August. The young swimmer decided to launch the campaign when she realized the Libyan Swimming Federation won’t be able to cover the expenses of her trip to Rio, due to the organization’s financial limitations. Salesforce plans to acquire data center optimization startup Coolan

Salesforce.com has signed a definite agreement to acquire Coolan, the developer of a platform for data center hardware analysis and optimization.

The acquisition appears to be designed to help Salesforce boost its own infrastructure for its customer relationship management software.

“Once the transaction has closed, the Coolan team will help Salesforce optimize its infrastructure as it scales to support customer growth around the world,” Amir Michael, Coolan’s cofounder and CEO wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

A Salesforce spokeswoman confirmed the acquisition. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

CIOs: Shadow IT Is Actually Great for Your Cloud Strategy

In a survey, cloud security broker vendor CipherCloud found that 86 percent of cloud applications used at workplaces are unsanctioned. That’s a pretty big percentage. Obviously, the security vendors have an incentive to raise such fears about shadow IT, so take this claim with much salt. However, the issue merits attention.

I don’t see shadow IT as that big of deal. Moreover, I believe that CIOs can embrace, rather than fight, the rise of shadow IT for their own benefit. How?

There are three benefits to the CIO from departments’ shadow cloud use.

The twosome has teamed up with Partners In Kynd to launch a new campaign called “#YoMamaMyMama.”

Here’s how it works.

Fans are given instructions to enter their moms to be chosen to receive a month’s worth of FREE groceries. Yep, FREE groceries for a full month!

Yesterday, The Game and Zulay met with one of his lucky fans, Eunice Hicks, her mother Yvette Hicks (who is a mother to 8 children), her sister and her son Ti’Tus for a grocery shopping spree in L.A.

Game wrote on his Instagram page,

Twitter permanently bans conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos

In the wake of the harassment of Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones, Twitter has permanently suspended conservative pundit and Breitbart Tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos.

Yiannopoulos, who tweeted under the handle @Nero, had several hundred thousand Twitter followers.

His account was permanently suspended around 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

A frequent provocateur on Twitter, Yiannopoulos is one of the biggest voices of the alt-right movement. His tweets frequently rallied against the so-called politically correct left and in support of causes such as GamerGate. He has also spoken widely against what he considers to be the ills of feminism.  Read more…

It’s a hot day, one of the rare few in London, when I meet David Wilde, the Essex County Council’s CIO, for a round of coffees and a chat to discuss how he and his team are making a difference to the people of Essex and helping the county government get through turbulent times.

The global recession changed the world, and the Essex County Council felt one of the hammer blows in October 2010, when the U.K. government announced its austerity program. The ECC’s budget, like every county council’s budget, was decimated, threatening the viability of almost every service, from policing to welfare, that the county council delivered to the county’s 1.4 million residents.

She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. <a href=”http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml”>Nicki Minaj</a> showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit. </P><P> </P><P><a href=”/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml”>Selena Gomez</a> turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce &amp; Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress. </P><P> </P><P>The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. The world is currently in the grips of an obsession with Naintic Inc’s Pokémon GO, the world’s most successful augmented reality game. It has taken over your social media feeds and your friendly neighborhood park. Police in Australia are issuing statements reminding people to look up from their phones when they are playing and crossing the street, people are being mugged and one man was already fired from his job over it. The game has been blamed on a lot of things, prompting  E! Online, of all outlets, to call it dangerous.

The cloud switch is on: From migration to management

At this week’s Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, I saw a shift in vendor focus. Last year, the big focus was migration. Whether the product was Office 365, Azure, or Dynamics, the framing was how to migrate, so many vendors offered migration tools. This year, despite a continued strong presence of migration offerings, the buzz had shifted to cloud management, typically via managed services offerings.

Rocco Seyboth, vice president of product and marketing for BitTitan (a company traditionally focused on migration), said vendors seek to shift from offering a one-time set of project services to offering recurring managed services. Being able to offer a combination of services after migration is essential for businesses to remain relevant — and keep making money.
